Sunday evening
Chrisâ apartment
They lingered over the steaks, then Sinia mentioned having to prepare for class in the morning, so Chris took her home. When he got back to his apartment, he retrieved her manuscript from his bedroom, sat down on the couch and started to read. It was goodâwell written, properly documented, illustrated, and with the attributions in place. She had even completed the copyright page and included sketches for a possible cover. Chris glanced at his watch. Nine p.m. here. It would be ten in Asheville. He reached over and grabbed his phone.
âHenry? Chris Urquhart.â
âChris! Howâs Texas treating you?â
âFine. Is this a bad time to call?â
âNot at all. Iâm just grading papers.â
Chris laughed. âBetter you than me!â
âYes, well, I asked for the job.â
âAnd the school is lucky to have you. Listen, Henry. I really do want to catch up, but I have a favor to ask first, a big one.â
âOh?â
âIâve met a historian down here.â
âAh. Why do I get the impression itâs a woman?â
âBecause you know me, thatâs why. Sheâs helping me out in the office until we can find a permanent assistant.â
âUm hum.â Chris grinned at the phone. Henry sounded skeptical.
âAll right, you old goat. Thatâs enough. She teaches here in the lower school system and in the community college, and sheâs written a book.â
âOh, has she?â Henry sounded even more skeptical.
Chris took a breath. Heâd known this was going to be a hard sell. âYes, she has. And itâs fascinating."
âWhatâs it about?â
âYou know about the Homesteads.â
âYes.â
âWell, this one, Loch Lonach, was founded on the eastern edge of Dallas. Sheâs pulled together the details of the trip; how the families found each other and the wagon train. Sheâs got maps and diaries, deeds and letters, all primary sources, and beautifully organized. Whatâs more, she can write. She knows how to capture a readerâs imagination.â
âAnd you want me to look at it and give her feedback.â
âI want more than that. I want you to look at it with an eye to publication. And I want my name kept out of it.â
âHow am I supposed to have come across this manuscript?â
âYou have contacts at the North Carolina University Press, right?â
âRight.â
âWell, itâs a small community. One of them should know someone in Texas.â
âWhy isnât the Texas Press doing this?â
âTheyâve seen it. I even saw some nice comments in the rejection letters, but sheâs not in the system and itâs a closed shop down here.â
âAh.â
âThereâs a connection to North Carolina, too. Her family comes from there. Her maiden name was Stewart.â
âHmm. Still a lot of Stewarts here.â
âAll Iâm asking is that you look at it. Youâll decide if itâs worth pursuing.â
âCan you send it to me?â
âVia email, tomorrow, after I scan it.â
âAll right. Iâll look at it, but no promises beyond that one.â
âThank you. I think youâll be pleasantly surprised.â
âIt has to be better than these student papers.â
