Sunday evening

Chris’ apartment

They lingered over the steaks, then Sinia mentioned having to prepare for class in the morning, so Chris took her home. When he got back to his apartment, he retrieved her manuscript from his bedroom, sat down on the couch and started to read. It was good—well written, properly documented, illustrated, and with the attributions in place. She had even completed the copyright page and included sketches for a possible cover. Chris glanced at his watch. Nine p.m. here. It would be ten in Asheville. He reached over and grabbed his phone.

“Henry? Chris Urquhart.”

“Chris! How’s Texas treating you?”

“Fine. Is this a bad time to call?”

“Not at all. I’m just grading papers.”

Chris laughed. “Better you than me!”

“Yes, well, I asked for the job.”

“And the school is lucky to have you. Listen, Henry. I really do want to catch up, but I have a favor to ask first, a big one.”

“Oh?”

“I’ve met a historian down here.”

“Ah. Why do I get the impression it’s a woman?”

“Because you know me, that’s why. She’s helping me out in the office until we can find a permanent assistant.”

“Um hum.” Chris grinned at the phone. Henry sounded skeptical.

“All right, you old goat. That’s enough. She teaches here in the lower school system and in the community college, and she’s written a book.”

“Oh, has she?” Henry sounded even more skeptical.

Chris took a breath. He’d known this was going to be a hard sell. “Yes, she has. And it’s fascinating."

“What’s it about?”

“You know about the Homesteads.”

“Yes.”

“Well, this one, Loch Lonach, was founded on the eastern edge of Dallas. She’s pulled together the details of the trip; how the families found each other and the wagon train. She’s got maps and diaries, deeds and letters, all primary sources, and beautifully organized. What’s more, she can write. She knows how to capture a reader’s imagination.”

“And you want me to look at it and give her feedback.”

“I want more than that. I want you to look at it with an eye to publication. And I want my name kept out of it.”

“How am I supposed to have come across this manuscript?”

“You have contacts at the North Carolina University Press, right?”

“Right.”

“Well, it’s a small community. One of them should know someone in Texas.”

“Why isn’t the Texas Press doing this?”

“They’ve seen it. I even saw some nice comments in the rejection letters, but she’s not in the system and it’s a closed shop down here.”

“Ah.”

“There’s a connection to North Carolina, too. Her family comes from there. Her maiden name was Stewart.”

“Hmm. Still a lot of Stewarts here.”

“All I’m asking is that you look at it. You’ll decide if it’s worth pursuing.”

“Can you send it to me?”

“Via email, tomorrow, after I scan it.”

“All right. I’ll look at it, but no promises beyond that one.”

“Thank you. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.”

“It has to be better than these student papers.”
